Planning a Safe and Memorable Trip to Kashmir

When I told my friends I was heading to Kashmir for a vacation, their first question was almost always, "Is it safe?"

While Kashmir was once known for safety concerns, the region has transformed significantly over the years. Today, it’s a peaceful destination that’s blossoming, attracting visitors from all over the world to explore its stunning landscapes and rich culture.

My journey took me to some of the safest and most beautiful places in Kashmir—Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg. Here's a glimpse of my trip.

Srinagar: The Heart of Kashmir

The heightened security around Srinagar's airport was noticeable but not intimidating. As we drove through the bustling streets to my hotel in the city center, it felt like any other busy city, with locals going about their day-to-day activities.

My first stop was the Mughal Gardens—Chashme Shahi, Shalimar Bagh, and Nishat Bagh. These beautiful gardens, with their pristine canals, fountains, and colorful flowers, are a UNESCO World Heritage site and absolutely worth visiting.

No trip to Srinagar is complete without seeing Dal Lake, the heart of the city. I hopped on a Shikara for a peaceful ride across the lake. The boat took me through a maze of lotus flowers and even to Char Chinar, an island famous for its four towering chinar trees.

Later, I strolled along Boulevard Road, which runs alongside Dal Lake. This vibrant road is lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels, with the usual extra security, but nothing unusual for a tourist destination.

Gulmarg: The Meadow of Flowers

On the way to Gulmarg, about 55 kilometers from Srinagar, my driver shared stories of Bollywood films shot in the region. Known as the "meadow of flowers," Gulmarg is stunning, surrounded by the snow-covered peaks of the Pir Panjal Range. The place was bustling with tourists, and I highly recommend the Gulmarg Gondola cable car ride, which offers breathtaking views of the valley. The first level, Kongdoori, sits at 3,100 meters, and the second, Apharwat, rises to almost 4,000 meters.

On my ride up, I was surprised to find food stalls selling snacks like Maggi and parathas at such high altitudes! My driver mentioned that the second level sometimes closes due to weather, so I felt lucky to have visited on a clear day.

Pahalgam: Serenity in the Valley

After the excitement of Gulmarg, I headed to Pahalgam, which sits at an altitude of over 2,700 meters. Nestled in the Lidder Valley, the views of the Lidder River, flanked by aromatic conifer trees, were a refreshing change from the usual cityscapes I’m used to. A visit to Kolahoi Glacier, which supplies water to the Anantnag district, is a must for nature lovers.

In Pahalgam, I also took a pony ride to Baisaran, which locals call "mini Switzerland." Other notable spots include Sheshnag Lake and the ancient Mamaleshwar Temple.

Safety Tips for Traveling in Kashmir

During my trip, I always felt safe, even as a solo female traveler. The locals were welcoming, and while there were some touts trying to sell souvenirs and shawls, a polite but firm "no" worked every time.

If you plan to visit Kashmir, here are a few tips to ensure a smooth and safe experience:

  • Book everything in advance: During peak season, everything books up quickly, so it’s best to secure your taxi, guides, and accommodations ahead of time.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: As with any destination, stay alert, but don't let it overwhelm your experience. Kashmir is generally very welcoming and safe.

  • Travel with a guide: To make the most of your trip, consider hiring a local guide who can give you deeper insights into the region's history and culture.

After an unforgettable stay in Gulmarg, I made my way back to Srinagar for my flight, taking with me memories of the breathtaking beauty and warm hospitality that Kashmir has to offer.

Kashmir is a place that offers not just scenic beauty but also an unforgettable experience that’s safe and welcoming to all travelers.
